Greatly misunderstood by foreigners and Chinese alike, Tibet draws a crowd from both. Tibet’s history dates back over thousands of years, it’s heyday’s being around the 7th century. This is also the time Buddhism migrated across the Himalayas into Tibet from India where it flourished. The 7th and 8th centuries also saw the founding of Lhasa, the capital city.

Tibetan relations with China begin in around the Tang Dynasty, where early relations were peaceful. Later in the Yuan Dynasty the Tibetans were to befriend the Mongols and established an allegiance. It was also at this time that the Potala Palace was constructed.

Coming into the modern era Tibet has had less fortune in the eyes of many with the takeover by PRC forces and the subsequent expulsion of the Dali Lama. It is true that some hard feelings remain but there is also a lot of progress in development of the area that expunges more optimistic views.

China has put much effort into developing the local economy and education for the local Tibetan farmers and Tibetan culture has simultaneously been able to export much of it’s culture to the rest of China. Significant progress had been made in infrastructure in Tibet as well. Recently, the Tibet-Qinghai railway (which can connect all the way to Beijing) has been opened bringing in a new era for tourism in the region.

GoChinaSites would strongly suggest a journey on this train, a journey that stretches thousands of kilometers across the untouched peaks of the Himalayas. It would be a great introduction to your story of Tibet!
